What is the Peak Rut phase of the rut?

Updated October 20, 2026

Peak Rut is the fifth phase of the rut in StagSense, centered on your area's peak breeding date, when breeding is underway and bucks pair off with does one at a time.

When it happens

In StagSense, Peak Rut covers the 4 days before to the 4 days after your area's peak. Where a source shows a wider breeding window, the phases stretch. In a Missouri study of 2,833 does, three quarters of adult and yearling breeding fell within two weeks.

What deer are doing

A buck stays with a doe in heat for about 24 to 48 hours, then moves on to look for another, researchers at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute write. The National Deer Association reports that a tending buck keeps his doe away from other deer, often in thick, screened cover.

Bucks search with a plan. In a South Texas GPS study, most bucks used only part of their home range during the rut and returned to two or more small areas every 20 to 28 hours.

Movement peaks now. In a Wisconsin GPS study of 188 bucks, movement climbed to its highest point during the local peak breeding period and fell after it, and the drop began before firearm season opened.

Older bucks move differently. In the Wisconsin study, bucks three and older had the most variable daily movement, which the researchers suggest may mean they alternate between searching for does and staying with them. At the peak, they also showed signs of shifting from dawn and dusk activity toward night activity.

How hunters approach it

Do not read a week of young-buck sightings as a sign the older bucks are gone. In the Wisconsin study, two-year-olds moved the most and had the largest daily ranges, while bucks three and older had the most variable movement and showed signs of shifting toward night activity.
