What is the Pre-Rut phase of the rut?

Updated October 20, 2026

Pre-Rut is the first phase of the rut in StagSense, three to four weeks before peak breeding, when bucks have left their summer groups and are rubbing trees and sparring.

When it happens

In StagSense, Pre-Rut covers the 28 to 22 days before your area's peak. Where a source shows a wider breeding window, the phases stretch. In a Texas field study, researchers counted the pre-rut as the month from 45 to 15 days before the local average conception date.

What deer are doing

Summer bachelor groups have broken up. A National Deer Association conservation director, quoted by Realtree, says shorter days raise testosterone, which hardens antlers, strips the velvet and makes bucks less tolerant of their old companions.

Bucks rub trees, and not mainly to clean velvet: rubbing goes on long after the velvet is gone. Researchers read rubs as scent and visual marks tied to dominance, and a Maine study found bucks picked small, smooth-barked trees.

Sparring builds before the rut. It lacks the aggression of a real fight, smaller-antlered bucks spar more often than big-antlered ones, and it may be the main way bucks settle rank.

Deer activity peaks around sunset and just after sunrise, a Michigan study found.

How hunters approach it

When you scout for rubs, check trail junctions, old roadbeds and woods next to open ground. Studies have found rubs concentrated in those places and clustered close together.
