What is the Seeking phase of the rut?

Updated October 20, 2026

Seeking is the third phase of the rut in StagSense, one to two weeks before peak breeding, when many bucks range outside their usual ground looking for does.

When it happens

In StagSense, Seeking covers the 14 to 8 days before your area's peak. Where a source shows a wider breeding window, the phases stretch.

What deer are doing

Bucks take trips outside their home range. In a Maryland GPS study of 32 adult bucks, 63% made at least one, mostly just before or during the breeding season. The average trip lasted 10.5 hours.

The researchers found hunting pressure an unlikely explanation for those trips, which came just before and during the breeding season.

Does are moving more as well. In a South Carolina GPS study, does' movement and activity rose over the 40 days before they conceived.

How hunters approach it

If a buck you have been watching goes missing for half a day or more, do not assume you pushed him out. In the Maryland study, hunting pressure was an unlikely cause of bucks leaving their home range; the trips came with the breeding season.
